Hello everyone!
The last blogposting was named "from the heat", and this one could be named the same way. It's so hot I am sweating even though I'm sitting still. In the shadow :)
The fountain (maapallokaivoprojekti) is on it's way to be built. Right now the artist Moustafa Mbaye does the drawings for it and when the drawings are ready, the fountain will be built in the neighborhood of Misira, Grand Yoff. The work will be done within July.
Souleymane and Minna are almost finished with the translation of Koirien Kalevala, Xaju Kalevala yi. When the translation is ready, the book is going to be read to the kids of Santhiaba and let them draw pictures for the book.
Johan has done some huge installations on the four computers of the office, and next Monday the computer classes till restart, Johan teaching and me (Krista) translating. This time we will have as pupils the young girls and boys from Santhiaba.
My project is moving on almost by itself, and sometimes I'm amazed of how well the kids are cooperating when it comes to working with children's rights. The other day, Albert came to the centre with great news: the kids of Kër Soda have demanded to treat children's rights on their "fun classes" every morning now that the official programs for this year is over :) Today the work will go on by playing the game "la route de la paix", which is given to us by the senegalese Amnesty International office.
Nabou, Malin (a Norwegian nurse staying in Dakar for the summer) and myself have also started putting together a group of women from Santhiaba, with who we are going to meet once a week and discuss women's issues, such as health, women's rights, the difference between male/female, wealthy/unwealthy, muslim/cristian etc. The object of this work is to give the women a possibility to reflect together on subjects that concerns all (!) women, as well as develop the niveau of french among the women. It's great to see that the project concerning human rights is really working here in Santhiaba, and I hope that some of the Finnish artists coming here in the fall could continue this work in one way or another, in the frame of their own work.
What else? Yesterday we finou-finous celebrated a lovely "juhannus" with Malin (norwegian) and Jesper (danish) on their roof-balcony. It was the first time we got dark bread for a loooong time, so you can imagine we liked it! Today we are celebrating still: it's Minna's birthday and Johan's name's day. We are going to plant a tree called Johan on the yard of the nearby school...
And while we finou-finous celebrate our own bizarre parties (what is "juhannus"...?), the senou-senous are enjoying the football games. And like this life here in Santhiaba continues like usual, finougalaisement :)

aujourd'hui:
on a travaillé sur la bibliothéque et arrangé les livres que kër soda nous avons donné dans les étageres et aussi dans des cartons. on est entrain d'installer une troisième étagère pour les livres venant de la direction des livres et de la lecture. minna a travaillée avec founé, la femme qui va travailler dans la bibliothéque. l'ouverture officielle de la bibliothéque c'est demain, mercredi 24. mai 2006.
johan a commencé ces cours d'informatique depuit hier (lundi) avec les membres du centre pour maitriser un petit peut l'informatique pour le bien être des ordinateurs. il va commencé bientot des cours avec les femmes et les jeunes éleves.
après tous ce travail fait, on a fait un petit peut du teranga - mangé le poisson fumé, preparé par siré.

from the heat
another hot sunday, almost too hot, friends.
everybody is talking about football, but the activities continue as they should. we have aminta working with the ladies - even more so now, when they have invested in another machine - bintou with the girls, and as recently as last wednesday the course to read and write (french) started off with souleymane. well appreciated by its participants, and it will continue three evenings a week.
johan and krista have been holidaying in st. louis for some days, but will take up their work as soon as they're back. krista has been doing non-violence bracelets and discussing being hit with the kids and the computers have actually survived the absence of johan.
apart from this, people come for the library, and gather at the centre to watch tv in the evenings, and kids drop in to draw or colour. our house, indeed!
the streets get lively in the evenings, what with the days being too hot for anyone to move about, but the rains are approaching - we've even had some cloudy days and raindrops a couple of times. may as well profit and go swimming as long as one can.

nouvelles dans le chaleur

encore un dimanche quand il fait plus que chaud. les yeux sont fixé sur la télévision grace à la coupe du monde qui a commencait avant hier, mais les activités dans le centre marche presque comme d'habitude quand même.
krista et johan sont sortis pour decouvrir un peu la st. louis, donc le cours d'informatique va continuer quand ils reviens mardi. les deux vont plus mieux maintenant, et krista a aussi recommencé son travai ldes droits de l'enfant. ils ont fait des bracelats de non-violence pendant les séances, discuté sur les enfants frappé et chanté encore.
bintou a travaillé avec les petites filles sur la couture et la broderie en main aprés 9 moi de travaille et de formation en couture et broderie elle vont bientot prendre les vaccances mais bintou vas contunuer pour le centre , les femmes ont été active avec leurs travailles - qui marche bien , avec le nouveau machine que ils ont acheté - et le bibliothéque et frequanté. on attend toujours des livres de la litterature africaine, mais ca va y aller, on pense bien. minna a dessiné avec les enfants et la traduction de Seven Dog Brothers en wolof est maintenant vraiment, vraiment finis, et le travail continue avec Kalevala.
aussi, les courts d'alphabetisation a demarré mercredi soir avec souleymane, et va continuer lundi, mercredi, vendredi soirs.
apart de ca, on va avoir une reunion le mardi prochaine, et le projet avec le robine avance pétit a pétit - on va même aller regarder un robine de faire quelque chose sur ce soir même.
si non, ca va, finogalésement, et la pluîts s'approche - on a même des jours qui sont nuageux ...donc, faut profiter et aller a la plage quand on peut!

english up to date
friends,
there has been quite a lot going on, says the last french up to date, and have we got news for you after that, too: the heat is increasing on daily basis and due to cases of illnesses and general fatigue, this week has been slightly calmer than many before. we're all doing ok, though, getting better ndank ndank.
last week we had a very efficient meeting discussing the ever actual environmental project, the participation of the new members of JASG in the activities of Sunu Kër, and how to activate the women in the quartiers.
what comes to the environment, we are taking precautions to plant ten more trees along a few more streets, trying to make sure that they'll be in front of houses where people actually will care for watering them and enjoying to see them grow. apart from that, Ecopol will make us some trash cans to set up along the street, using recycled material like in their work in general.
june 15 we hope to organise a great big cleaning of the streets, and to engage whole the quartier. at the same time the event will be used to inform the inhabitants once more of why the project exists, bins that Aprosen have given us will be dealt to the households and people carefully explained that they are meant for garbage, not for rice or clothes. there are photos to be added of these, asap.
discussing women's participation in the association and the work of the centre is also an evergreen topic. for the moment there are some who are making clothes and jewellery, and we have foune and mame diarra who will occupy themselves with the library , but the number of active ladies could be bigger. working on it, surely!
we have the project with yet another fontaine, and wish to build it sooner rather than later, also here in grand yoff.
and, wasn't it for krista and johan falling ill due to mosquito bites, i'd happily announce that their work is doing well. however, the beginning has been very promising, krista participating at the Ker Soda school and working also at the centre with groups of children - she has even written a song on the children's rights, which quite a few know by heart already. =) she and omar are also taking baby steps to continue the cooperation with the local branch of Amnesty International, and krista is hoping to also work with a group of women later on in june. together with albert they have also been planning to arange an event in august, in order to present the work done with human rights at the centre.
as for johan, as recently as today there has been yet some changes in the office - there are now four machines available due to investment in a new and well working modem. the computer courses began last week and had have had a varying number of participants, but there are many eager learners, and as soon as johan is fully recovered we hope to have proper groups for members, women and youngsters. krista and modou have been translating when needed.
...as for the atmospheare in general, it feels as if Sunu Kër really is becoming Sunu Kër. there are small activities on daily basis - if it isn't bintou working with the girls, it's minna drawing with the kids or awa cheikh repeating for a school event. youngsters show up in the evenings to watch TV, and every friday and monday there are screenings of films. so far the selection has been slightly dominated by action, but that will change, and there has already been exceptions. the library is really starting to interest people, slowly but steadily. Diina baax, i'd like to say. all doors open.

Fin de la semaine
Bonjour à tous!
Beaucoup de choses ont eu lieu à Sunu Ker depuis la dernière fois qu'on a écrit, donc il faut révéler un peut. Premièrement, la chaleur est venu à Santhiaba. Les trois derniers jours ont été tellement chauds, et hier soir on avait la première pluie. Aah, quel sentiment de rester sous l'eau fraîche!
Malgré la chaleur tout le monde a été actif ici dans le centre et autour. Hier soir nous avons eu une réunion avec la committé de gestion (Babacar, Modou, Omar, Souleyman, Aminta, Mati, Minna, Krista), où on a traité le projet d'environnement, l'activité des nouveaux membres de JASG ainsi que l'engagement des femmes.
Le projet d'environnement va donc être continué par planter environ dix arbres sur les rues de Santhiaba (près du centre). On va commencer par faire des visites aux maisons de familles, pour demander l'intérêt des gens de prendre soin des arbres. Il est très inutile de planter des arbres sans avoir quelqu'un qui s'occupe des arbres, n'est-ce pas? Des corbeilles vont être faits par des moniteurs d'Ecopole avec la récuperation des matériaux. Regardez les fotos qu'on met plus tard.
Le 15 juin, on va essayer d'engager tout le monde du quartier pour le nettoyer profondement, comme en 2004. Après le ménage on arrange un grand rendez-vous sur la rue, qui sera ouvert pour chacun et chacune du quartier. Dans ce rendez-vous on presentera les corbeilles et expliquera leur signification: "maintenant le quartier est propre et nous voulons qu'il reste comme cela". On donnera même des poubelles aux maisons des gens (voir fotos), et expliquera comment il faut utiliser les poubelles. Les poubelles on l'a eu en collaboration avec Aprosen qui vont nous accompagner dans la sensibilisation pour que les bénéficiaires utilisent les poubelles pour les ordures ménagères.
Concernant le rendez-vous des nouveaux membres du JASG: demain (dimanche) soir on arrange une réunion pour les nouveaux membres pour leur presenter les activités du centre et pour essayer de leur engager. On va même presenter le projet de l'environnement, la plantation des arbres etc. J'ai fait un horaire des activités qui sera mis sur le tableau d'information, et même cet horaire sera presenté demain à la réunion.
Dans la réunion d'hier on a discuté comment on pouvait engager les femmes dans les activités du centre. Maintenant les femmes ne s'engagent pas trop. Il y a des femmes qui viennent pour faire la couture et les bijoux, et puis Founé qui s'occupe de la bibliothèque, et il y a des femmes qui viennent régulièrement chercher des livres dans la bibliothèque. Mais la presence des femmes pouvait quand même être beaucoup plus grand.
Le dernier sujet de la réunion d'hier était la fontaine ("maapallokaivoprojekti"). On a décidé de la mettre dans le quartier de Misira de Grand Yoff. Le travail sera fait pendant le mois de juin, mais on va tout d'abord contacter le maire le plus vite possible pour avoir l'autorisation pour commencer le travail.

Albert, Omar et moi ont déjà planifié d'avoir une soirée des droits de l'enfant en août, oû on present le travail, les chansons, les dessins etc. qu'on a fait avec les enfants pendant l'été.

on a travaillé sur la bibliothéque et arrangé les livres que kër soda nous avons donné dans les étageres et aussi dans des cartons. on est entrain d'installer une troisième étagère pour les livres venant de la direction des livres et de la lecture. minna a travaillée avec founé, la femme qui va travailler dans la bibliothéque. l'ouverture officielle de la bibliothéque c'est demain, mercredi 24. mai 2006.
johan a commencé ces cours d'informatique depuit hier (lundi) avec les membres du centre pour maitriser un petit peut l'informatique pour le bien être des ordinateurs. il va commencé bientot des cours avec les femmes et les jeunes éleves.
après tous ce travail fait, on a fait un petit peut du teranga - mangé le poisson fumé, preparé par siré.
